Edith Massey is best known as Edie from Pink Flamingos, John Waters' trash masterpiece. She's the huge fat lady who marries the Egg Man, who trucks her out of her trailer home in a wheelbarrow. She starred in many of Waters' films, one role more bizarre than the next. She ran a thrift store in Baltimore for years, and then moved it to California when she fled the winters.
As unlikely as it seems, she toured with a punk band called Edie & the Eggs, and even recorded a single. Side A was a cover of "Big Girls Don't Cry" and the B-side was her touching paean to the punk rock scene, called "Punks Get Off the Grass." Of course they are on youtube. What isn't?
Despite looking like Sloth's little sister, she even appeared on a John Cougar Mellencamp album cover, and in his video for "This Time," where she plays his real love, after a string of floozies. Edith was one of a kind, and really made John Waters movies just that more bizarre, with her cartoonish voice and ever-cheerful attitude. RIP, Edie.
